The NAIT Ooks Summer Hockey School is coming this August, offering young athletes the opportunity to sharpen their skills, build confidence, and prepare for the upcoming hockey season in a high-energy, supportive environment.
Led by Scott Fellnermayr, head coach of the NAIT Men's Hockey team, and Brendan Jensen, head coach of the NAIT Women's Hockey team, the camp combines elite-level instruction with a passion for youth development. With more than 10–15 years of experience working with young hockey players, Fellnermayr and Jensen have built a program focused on fundamentals, skill progression, and fun.
Supporting instructors ensure a strong coach-to-player ratio, striving for one instructor for every six participants. All skill levels are welcome, and every athlete is guaranteed to improve in key areas including skating, stickhandling, passing, shooting, puck protection, and overall hockey sense.
What to Expect Each Day
Each camp day is designed to maximize development through a balanced mix of on-ice and off-ice training:
Two On-Ice Sessions (1 Hour Each)
Session One – Skating Focus
The day begins with 30 minutes of dedicated power skating (no pucks), where players learn and refine:
- Forward stride mechanics
- Backwards skating
- Tight turns and punch turns
- Crossovers
- Quick starts
- Advanced edge work
The second half of the session applies those skating fundamentals to game-like drills with pucks, helping players translate technique into real-game situations.
Session Two – Puck Skills Focus
Players rotate through skill stations targeting stickhandling, passing, and shooting. Drills and progressions are tailored to individual development, creating a positive environment for both experienced and newer players.
Off-Ice Development
Swedish Stickhandling Ball Training (30 Minutes Daily)
Campers participate in specialized Swedish Stickhandling Ball drills designed to dramatically improve hand speed and control. Each participant receives their own Swedish Stickhandling Ball to take home, along with a list of drills to continue their development beyond camp.
Games & Hockey-Specific Training
Off-ice sessions combine fun, sport-based games with hockey-focused training elements, including:
- Plyometrics
- Dynamic stretching
- Sprint work
- Agility training
- Hockey-specific conditioning exercises
The goal is to build athleticism while keeping kids engaged and energized.
