If there's one sport that many people describe as thrilling, fast-paced, and intense, it's ice hockey. One of the most crucial off-season tasks is finding new and talented athletes to complement their already strong roster.
According to head coach Scott Fellnermayr, the team's top priority when recruiting is character. "We look for guys who have a positive impact both on and off the ice—players who support their teammates and help create a strong, healthy team environment," Fellnermayr explained. He added that they plan to keep that same standard with the new players joining the program this year.
Recruitment is never an easy process. The coaching staff must constantly monitor returning players while also identifying new talent that fits the team's culture. For the Ooks, character and chemistry are just as important as skill, which makes the selection process even more thoughtful. Last season, the team lost two forwards, two defensemen, and one goalie, leaving gaps to fill. However, Fellnermayr said he and his staff did an excellent job recruiting players who can step in and continue the program's success.
With new faces on the ice, the first few weeks of practice focus heavily on building good habits, which Fellnermayr says is the foundation for everything that follows. Once that foundation is set, the team transitions into learning their structure, defensive zone coverage, forecheck systems, and overall team play. "We start with simple, clear concepts that evolve as the season progresses," Fellnermayr noted. This approach applies to every player, including returning veterans.
Here's a closer look at some of the new players joining the Ooks this season:
- Jack Clarke (Forward): A skilled player with excellent vision who can adapt to multiple positions.
- Decker Mujcin (Forward): A strong, fast winger known for being tough to play against.
- Tristan Taylor (Defense): A big, physical defenseman with strong skating ability.
- Avery Trotter (Defense): A smooth, skilled defender who excels at making smart passes.
- Wilson Maxfield (Goaltender): A dependable goalie returning from hip surgery, eager to bring his energy and determination to the team.
With such a promising mix of returning veterans and talented newcomers, the NAIT men's hockey team is poised for another exciting season. Their blend of character, skill, and commitment ensures the Ooks will continue to bring passion and energy to the ice all season long.
