The start of a new season brings new games, new challenges, and new faces to the court. The NAIT Ooks women's basketball team continues to grow with the addition of new student-athletes. Each year, the team looks to add new players who can complement the exciting energy already found in the gym and on the court.
When recruiting new members, the coaching staff focuses on student-athletes who align with the program's values and understand what it means to be both a student and an athlete. They look for people who love to compete, are eager to grow on and off the court, embrace challenges, and are excited to be part of something bigger than themselves.
Unlike many teams, the women's basketball coaching staff didn't recruit for any specific position this season. Instead, they focused on finding players who fit into the team's culture and share the long-term vision for the program. Head Coach Kiera Lyons shared her perspective:
"Our priority is always bringing in players who will elevate the team both on and off the court."
Even after finding players who align with the program's vision, the real work begins in practice. During the first few weeks, the emphasis will be on improving fitness, developing strong defensive play, and building team chemistry. Although maintaining chemistry among many different personalities can be challenging, Coach Lyons believes every season is a new opportunity to strengthen connections between athletes. She's supported by a strong group of returning veterans who help create a welcoming environment where new players can find their place.
Here's a quick introduction to this year's new recruits:
- Divine Mugugu, a first-year athlete from Winnipeg
- Jessica Hardy, a first-year athlete from Cardston
- Declynn Wood, a first-year athlete from Peace River
- Makayla Rose, a fifth-year athlete transferring from the United States
These new players will be valuable additions to the team, bringing great energy and character while representing what it means to be an NAIT athlete.
