Griffins Take Game One 1-0 Over Ooks

EDMONTON, ATLA. - The NAIT Ooks fell 1-0 to the MacEwan Griffins in game one of the ACAC Women's Hockey Championship.

The visiting MacEwan Griffins came out ready to play as they outshot the Ooks 11-4 in the first period however, the game would remain scoreless through twenty minutes of play.

In the second period, the Ooks would push back evening out the control of play. Both teams tried to be the first to score in the Championship series, but to no avail, as the game would still remain scoreless through forty minutes of play.

The third period began gridlocked like the majority of the game, as the top two teams in the Conference desperately looked to find some offense. It wasn't until the 5:32 mark that the Griffins' Karlie Bell beat the ACAC Rookie of the year Kaitlyn Slator with a backhand on a partial breakaway, to give her team a 1-0 lead with 14:28 to play.  The Ooks attempted to equalize the game in the remaining minutes of the third, but MacEwan held on for the 1-0 victory, taking a 1-0 series lead.

"We played an experienced team tonight, it was expected that they would come out ready to play. I think we both had good scoring chances, they just happened to capitalize on one of them. It's going to be a tight battle all series long," said NAIT head coach, Stef Thomson.

Karlie Bell's game-winning goal earned her player of the game honours for the Griffins, while Kaitlyn Slator took the honours home for the Ooks.

Game two will take place tomorrow night at the Rogers Downtown Community Arena at 6:00 pm.
