Ooks And Griffins Square Off In ACAC Women's Hockey Championship

EDMONTON, ALTA. – The NAIT Ooks women's hockey team will be competing for ACAC gold as they take on the MacEwan Griffins in the 2019 ACAC Women's Hockey Championship March 8th – 16th

The Ooks earned their spot in the Championship series after sweeping the Olds College Broncos 2-0 (3-0, 4-1) in the semifinals. "As a team, we felt great about the way we played in both games. I think the back to back wins were a direct result of our team's ability to focus on the details, buy into the systems each shift and play as a team," said NAIT head coach, Stef Thomson.

NAIT is the top seed in the series as they finished first in the ACAC standings with a 19-2-3 record. NAIT has the top four scorers in the league. Verca Kuzelova leads the league with 25 points, followed by three of her teammates, Brittney Savard (22), Megan LeBlanc (22) and Carlin Boey (18). Not only do they have the top-ranked offense, but Ooks have solid goaltending on the back end. Kaitlyn Slator sits second in the league in both GAA (1.62) and SV% (.933), Slator also set a new ACAC record this year for most saves in a season (570).

The MacEwan Griffins defeated the Red Deer College Queens 2 games to 1 in the semifinals to find their way into the Championship series.  They finished the regular season in second place with a 17-5-2 record. The Griffins are led by Chantal Ricker who put up 18 points in regular season play.  They are backstopped by Sandy Heim who has been stellar all year. She leads the league in both GAA (1.06) and SV% (.948). The Ooks won four of the six meetings between the two teams this year, with two of the wins and one of the losses coming in overtime or a shootout.

"MacEwan is a very skilled team that plays a very defensive game. We know that we are going to have to get creative when it comes to getting pucks to the net and capitalizing. Every time we've played MacEwan it's been a battle, I don't expect anything different this time around." said Thomson

The Ooks will be looking to win the best of five series and capture ACAC gold for the first time since 2014-2015 which was the last third straight ACAC titles. The Griffins, on the other hand, will be looking to complete their own three-peat as they have won the last two ACAC Championships.
